• Put a flower in a vase to lift your spirits while drinking that cup of coffee or tea.
• Bring a flower home or to work for your table or desk.
• Choose a china cup instead of a paper version.
• Choose a crystal glass bowl instead of a plastic container.
• Take a minute before eating to give thanks with a song, grace, or even ten seconds of silence.
• Most of all, remind yourself that you and your family are worth the effort.
Families are connected through tradition and stories, which can help build trust and communication between their members. If you usually eat out, consider skipping the restaurant tonight. Cook dinner at home together. If you already cook dinner for your family, consider making this time together even more special. Leave the paper napkins in the drawer tonight and use cloth, or surprise the children by asking them to put flowers on the table. Light a candle, or use the china a little more often. And please, turn off the television. For those moms and dads who have little children, invite them to join you in setting the dinner table as if you were kings, queens, princes, and princesses. Imagine and talk about what it was like back in the “olden days” when family and friends entertained each other. The children will probably love it. They seem to always want to know the stories of the world, and the best people to tell them these stories are their moms and dads.
My husband and I often serve a mysterious dinner on the floor in our home for our children, under a rainbow of multicolored toile that serve as a magical Eastern desert tent. At a dinner such as this, your family can discuss past traditions, dining, and culture. You can also explore how to bring a little tradition into your family life today. If there are small children present, conversation may center on fairies, pirates, kings and queens—Robin Hood, King Arthur and his knights, or even Cinderella. You might want to use a little book I wrote for a school children’s program called the Cornish Fairy-Pixie Conference. It is set in medieval Cornwall and contains artwork to guide children in a fun walking exercise and a diet program using a pedometer for each child and posters that can be put on the wall.1 And consider some simple wholefood meals you can make at home. You can find lots of great books in your library or bookstore, even for ”quick and easy” whole-food preparation. Begin with planning even one meal at home each week. If you can engage a friend in becoming a food detective, you can share the great recipes you each discover, or even get together to prepare a healthy meal each week. A little planning like this can help immensely with the long-term goal of better nutritional intake and enhanced health.
